How much does a website cost in South Africa?
11 August 2026 · 7 min read
The most common question South African business owners ask when they start thinking about a website is: what is this going to cost? The honest answer is that it depends — but that answer is useless without context. This article breaks down what drives website costs in South Africa, what different types of projects actually cost, and what to look out for when comparing quotes.
Why website prices in South Africa vary so much
Website design prices in South Africa can range from under R5 000 to over R200 000 for the same apparent brief. That range is not dishonest — it reflects genuinely different types of work. A website built from a shared template with minimal customisation is a different product to a custom-designed, custom-built site with a content strategy behind it. Understanding what drives the price is more useful than searching for an average.
The main cost drivers
- Custom design vs template: A custom design built specifically for your brand takes significantly more time than applying your logo and colours to a theme someone else designed.
- Number of pages and content complexity: A five-page site costs less than a twenty-page site with service-specific landing pages.
- Functionality requirements: A standard brochure site costs less than one with booking systems, customer portals, or product configurators.
- Technical stack: Custom code gives more control and better performance but costs more to build than a template-based CMS approach.
- Content production: Who writes the copy? Who provides or commissions photography? This is frequently left out of website quotes.
- Ongoing costs: Hosting, domain renewal, maintenance, and any monthly retainer for updates or SEO.
What different types of websites cost in South Africa
Business and professional websites
A properly designed business website — custom layout, professional copy, structured pages for each service, on-page SEO foundations — typically starts at R17 500 and can range to R35 000 or more depending on scope. Cheaper options exist but usually involve template-based builds with limited customisation, which affects how the site positions the business.
Website redesigns
Redesigning an existing site typically costs from R18 000 upwards. The lower end applies when the existing content and structure are sound and the rebuild is primarily design-led. Redesigns that also require structural work — new page hierarchy, new content, new messaging — cost more because they are effectively new builds with the added complexity of migrating existing content.
E-commerce websites
E-commerce sites in South Africa range from R25 000 to R60 000 and above. The range reflects the complexity of the product catalogue, the need for custom buying experiences, payment gateway integration, and fulfilment logic. A basic product catalogue with standard checkout is at the lower end; a multi-category store with complex product variations and a custom checkout flow is at the upper end.
Web applications
Custom web applications — booking platforms, client portals, internal tools, marketplace-style products — start considerably higher than marketing sites. Budgets typically start at R80 000 and scale with complexity. These are bespoke software projects, not website builds with extra pages.
What is not included in most website quotes
When comparing website quotes, check carefully for what is excluded. The items that most frequently appear as additions after a quote is accepted include:
- Copywriting: Many studios quote for design and development only. Professional copy for each page is a separate line item.
- Photography or image licensing: Stock photography costs money. Custom photography costs more.
- Logo or brand design: If the logo needs work, this is typically separate.
- Domain and hosting: Some studios include the first year; others bill separately.
- Ongoing maintenance: What happens when something breaks after launch? Monthly maintenance agreements are usually not included in the build quote.
- SEO work: A website being built with SEO in mind is different from active SEO work after launch. Clarify which is included.
The price versus cost distinction
A R6 000 website that does not convert visitors, does not rank in search results, and does not represent the business well is more expensive in the long run than a R25 000 website that earns enquiries. The relevant number is not what the website costs to build — it is what it costs relative to what it does.
“The cheapest option is rarely the cheapest outcome. The question is what the website is supposed to do for the business, and whether it will actually do that.”
